Collectible Swatch Pieces: Diaphane One

It was always exciting to see a Swatch advertisement in the 90’s. Cool, funky, hyped-about, and fun pieces that adults spent on, to make themselves smile.

I remembered visiting my dad’s colleague’s house. An interesting man, who functioned as a Builder, his true hobby was high-tech stereo systems, laser discs, and an entire room built to house his massive Swatch Collection.

The crowning glory was the Swatch Tresor Magique, made in platinum. He had a few of them I recalled. A truly unique run of platinum metal swatches. It sat there among a neatly curated “museum” of Swatch paraphenalia of outstanding Swatch packaging. There were plastic robots, unusual casings etc.

And there were hundreds of drawers filled with Swatch pieces, all in mint condition. Sadly, I don’t know how to contact my dad’s friend again. That was almost 3 decades ago.

Fast forward to today. An article on Hodinkee by Logan Barker, about the Swatch Tresor Magique stirred-up these old latent memories. (https://www.hodinkee.com/)

So today, I will write about an interesting Swatch piece which collectors have been talking/writing about.

 The Swatch Diaphane One

A carousel (technically related to a tourbillon) was housed in this Swatch. Some regard the Carousel as a high-complication.

A plastic with aluminium version was released in 2001 in a limited run of 2222 pieces, of which 222 pieces were allocated to Place Vendome. On these pieces are a single diamond or a diamond together with sapphire and ruby, on the back of the watch

Later in 2006/7, they released the Diaphane One Turning Gold with a Gold Bezel which was limited to 100 pieces. This version does not have the diamond or 3-stones on the caseback.

The prices of these pieces are not too high considering the complication within it. Last I checked, some examples of the Diaphane One were offered for USD 6,000 via auctions or the grey market.

The later or latter edition, in gold, is currently a unicorn. Last example was listed USD $8,000. As 100 pieces exist, I believe collectors will be very reluctant to sell these.

They’re still available now, but nothing beats the opportunity to get it brand new. Yes, the plastic is a little hard to get past. I heard many of the Jellyfishes from the 80’s have changed colour. Most recently they released the Queens 70th anniversary o...

Don’t regret this Ronald. Life’s priorities took a toll on me recently. I cannot purchase anything for another year I estimate.

I appreciate the advice. No purchases...
