It would have been designed that way. It doesn't look like a misprint and is very similar to the 4 on my Submariner...
It's not a mistake, it's just a variation.
At some point they changed the typeface/type design. Btw, my '83 Submariner has a 4 that is about half-way between sharp and flat.
