The practicality of an Annual Calendar

Jul 22, 2019,06:08 AM

I seem to have longed for an AC for a long time and having neared the date when I thought I may pull the trigger I now find myself questioning the practicality of getting one.

I love the complication, the dressy nature of the watch and in all honesty it’s probably the closest I’ll ever come to a grail like high complication. That said it’s a likely weekend watch at most and as part of a mid sized rotation it may in all likelihood spend as much time in the box as it will on my wrist. I’m not a fan of winders though imagine it would be essential, of course that’s no issue but putting it out there to the community how practical is an AC and how do you manage one in a mid to large size collection.

If you’re like me, you’ll need to put it on a winder.

While I don’t care how the date is set on a time-date watch, I can’t stand a wrong date on a PC or AC - it’s their raison d‘être to show the correct date after all. Unless you’re of the really disciplined kind and wind it at least every other day, a winde...

They are much more robust and legible than perpetuals and solve 90% of the issue with months having varying number of days. In terms of practicality within a larger collection - it is a question of whether you view the adjustment process as a chance to in...

The older Perpetuals only advance; I hear there are new ones that allow you to wind back. But for the older ones, it can be problematic if you travel frequently across day-change timezones. For this reason, I prefer ACs as a rule--they are as complex as I...

In 2019 just think of it like a triple calendar

A Calendar watch is already a very useful complication - the programming adjustments tracking benefit will still be beneficial if you are wearing at the end of a month.

I do love Annual Calendars and find the complication very practical on a daily basis

As so many other things, it's very personal, but since you asked: - I use my AC daily during long periods of time to really enjoy the complication. - Even though a PC is a higher complication, I don't really feel that I "need" one in the collection having...

Also practical if you use the date as a reference on a daily basis (as I do)

If you're not a 'watch freak', not much different to an AC. But as a watch-nut, I prefer the additional complication. I also prefer window indications to subdials, which is a bit of a contradiction as one of my dream watches is the 5970 (or 5270).
