so if its the quality of the gasket (o-ring) and service intervals that keeps the water out then it leads to another question for me...=)
is the material that the gaskets re made from pretty standard then? meaning that there is no difference between the aftermarket and the originals?

The engineers can make you what you want to whatever depth you want. The big difference between glass/saphire and metal is that in failure metal will bend, at some point affecting the working of the watch, and glass will fracture, you can imagine. But bot...

To be objective, the weak points in the construction of a waterproof watch are the gaskets. Adding a display back does add one gasket to the 4 that are already present in a standard case(crystal/case-frame, case-frame/case-back, case-frame/tube, tube/crow...
