negging

its a technique called negging, a passive aggressive "compliment" that pick up artists use to pick up women e.g. "you look good for your age" used as a sales technique.
the negging sales technique may have failed on you but it works on people with low self esteem and those who need external validation which is a large percentage of luxury brand customers.

Luxury retail experience anecdotes

 By: ThomasM : November 13th, 2017-18:10
Many years ago I walked into a legacy Patek Philippe authorized dealership. I was wearing a Harry Winston Z-1. The salesperson sized me up, trying not to be too obvious (but failing) - "nice watch. Too bad it's not a real watch, like Patek Philippe." Rece...

That's some crappy comment.

Fortunately , i go into shops wearing a Seiko and get no such comments.

I've been relatively lucky

Or I've been shopping at Mega-Luxury Group franchises e.g. Richemont or LVMH. At those boutiques, they never "diss" the competition e.g. Cartier says: "Ah...A. Lange & Soehne is an excellent brand but we offer different models" and vice versa. Even th...

My experience too

certainly on Bond St etc

Sales people like those are called...

...obnoxious. I would have asked for the manager of the store, and in no uncertain terms informed them that I would be purchasing x watch (or car)...but somewhere else. I haven't run into that much where I live (SF Bay Area). I think it's because a 20-som...

Just as you point out....

it isn't a luxury/non-luxury product/service question. It is a people question. A global people question. Primarily stemming from a lack of education because physical sales jobs usually don't require higher education regardless of their geographical locat...

I walked into a Patek boutique...

on a couple of occasions unshaven, wearing a t-shirt, shorts, and flip-flops. I was treated with the utmost respect. The same was true at Lange, VC, JLC, Journe etc boutiques. Maybe even though I look like a "bum", the salespeople think I am a "bum" with ...

I believe it's basically a matter of ignorance

 By: piccolochimico (aka dsgalaxy1) : November 13th, 2017-21:47
I mean, no matter what you're going to sell, first be always professional. I'm selling drugs (pharmacist, not a pusher) and I must admit that today customers are too demanding, rude and ignorant. Sometimes I must say NO to their requests explaining my rea...

You know....

I happen to think trust is in fact the main ingredient if not simply good manners and respect for the less interactive jobs, but I also find it completely irrelevant how I perceive most retail salespeople because all that matters to me is whether or not I...

Many years ago a friend of mine went down to a Mercedes AD wearing a Tshirt and jeans and some sneakers .

 By: Watchonthewrists : November 13th, 2017-22:39
He looked at a car and asked the sales person how much is that model , the sales person told him he probably cant afford that one , my friend was so angry that he asked to the sales person to let the boss of the company come down , he asked if the boss co...

Such a behaviour coming from “high end” (or not!) salespersons is absolutely stupid and despicable. Fortunately, I never experienced such bad moments

 By: Alkiro1 : November 13th, 2017-23:24
I mainly enter into luxury shops as a “normal” person (jeans, sneakers...) and I never heard something like that. Maybe these salespersons should keep in mind that the clothes don’t make the man even if they think the opposite. Best wishes Alkiro

I have never found that.

I have always been treadted with respect whether by a patek dealer or journe. or any one else. I think maybe you just had some bad apples or they were trying to be funny?

Every once in a while we all go thru that experience in retail, flights, dining out etc...

... Increasingly there is a lot a bitterness brewing amongst the younger generation due to the increasing wealth gap. It is most apparent during the sales experience as most are on commissions and have to push sales to meet goals. AFAIK, everyone sizes yo...

Though it doesn't help their cause, but if you don't put out your best they somehow don't bother to cater their best....

Effort has to come on both sides - think of it this way if you have so much money that you don't care should they. There is always someone with more money around the corner. If Patek wants to sell 5711/1A at 60k they will still find a waiting list.

Don't take any notice.....

Rise above it and get on with your day

When I bought my Cartier Santos,,,

 By: rdenney : November 14th, 2017-14:37
I was wearing my Zenith Captain. I got the "real watch" comment. I smiled and took his business card. Then I waited a week, went back, worked with a different salesman, and bought the watch. I needed to think about the purchase anyway. The second guy was ...

Agree...a computer will never

open a split of Bolly to provide relief from a busy and humid London summer day, as did the associate at VC in on Bond Street. You gotta take the bad with the good. Usually much more good than bad. Best, Brandon
