Avoid poisoned gift...

I think it's an incredibly personal thing: we can suggest a zillion possibilities, but it's his ideas and how it looks in the flesh that count.

Also, think about servicing costs etc, you don't want to lumber the guy with something that costs an arm and a leg and six months to service, especially if he's not a watch person.

Wedding Gift Ideas...

 By: jimly : September 19th, 2012-23:15
Hello, all. My parents want to buy my future brother-in-law a watch as a wedding gift. They said the budget will be between $6K-$7K. My BIL seems to have an affinity for chronographs and prefers straps over bracelets. He's on the thinner side and could pr...

Give us a few more clues

Do you think he will be into history and 'significance' or want something with modern design flair? Is he traditional or avant-garde? In the former, the Omega Speedmaster Pro is my go-to chronograph ... and of course it looks great on a strap as well. And...

My favorite chronograph in your price range...

...is something from the Breitling Navitimer range. I chose the Navitimer Datora Montbrillant, but there are others in the line. It's slightly larger than the 42mm you mention (44mm), but may be worth looking at. There's also the Navitimer 01, which uses ...

Andrew's suggestion would be mine, too . . .

. . . if your future brother-in-law had a natural appreciation for watches. My concern is that manual winding might seem an anachronism. A Zenith El Primero . . . [image courtesy Bruno] . . . is another choice, with comparable quality and tradition plus t...

Zenith is my vote but ...

Allow me to disagree about the model with our good Dr. No. Go for the "New Vintage 1969" and your brother-in-law will say "thank you" forever. Cheers, Nilo ...

If only . . .

. . . all disagreements were as trifling as ours, this world would be such a nicer place! :-) PS - our mutual favorite might be difficult to find now, some three years after its introduction; I haven't seen any new models for sale locally in quite some ti...

I'm surprised no one mentioned the MIH watch yet...

Watch is priced at CHF6000, right within the US$6-7K budget. Clean dial, annual calendar function, chrono counter at the back. Made by famous watchmarkers, highly respected by the watch collectors. The 7750 based movement can take a beating. The only cons...

Chopard or Rolex

If you shop around you can find a nice Chopard dress watch for him to wear on his wedding day :-) within your price range and its a well known brand that even a non-WIS can appreciate or if you want to play it super safe a Rolex Submariner is also in your...

How about JLC?

 By: 02acs : September 21st, 2012-01:53
You can get the Master Control chrono NIB from an authorized dealer for a few hundred over 7k. Hard to beat JLC in terms of dressy watches. The JLC that I own (a master compressor geographic) is the most accurate watch that I own. Good luck.

Reverso Gan Sport Chrono is even a better choice.

The movement is outstanding, the complication is original ( Retrograde Chrono ), and the look is First Class. All this within your budget. Best, Nicolas

There are much more possibilities in the Vintage World, within this budget.

And should I say cooler offers? Best, Nicolas.

For a non-watch guy, you probably need to buy him a watch with strong branding

 By: AnthonyTsai : September 22nd, 2012-09:40
that has spent millions of dollars on advertising. If you get him a brand he's never heard of, I feel he won't like the watch much. That's the reality of it. So, my suggestion would just be an Omega or Rolex. It would be awesome to introduce him to other ...

...go with a brand name. Most people have no idea about watches other than maybe Omega, Rolex and Patek. The Patek will obviously not be in the price range for the gift. Cheers, Daos

Thanks for the ideas, everyone!

All your suggestions have been really helpful. Ultimately the choice is his but I just wanted to show him a variety within our budget so he can make an informed decision. My mom hopes that he picks out something with some "name value" but being a fan of w...
