Another point
One other thing that no one has mentioned is that the older Rolex designs had hollow center links which would stretch over time. The gold especially being softer than steel were more prone to this. In recent years the switch to solid center links should help the overall condition of the bracelt over time.
I have a role gold/steel Datejust 116201 and a steel 116610 LV both of which are the newer solid link designs so I'll have to see how it holds up over the future.
