Question: Would you pay more for a lower numbered watch in a series than a higher number?

 By: Obeezy : May 24th, 2020-07:45
I donā€™t know if this question has been posed before, but Iā€™ve always wondered about what fellow collectors think. I have my theory, but would love to hear from others. Letā€™s side aside number 1...likely a different story. Assume there are 50 pieces in a s...

No way! [nt]

I think you may be asking in the wrong (or right) market...

In some cultures numbers hold great significance, much more so then in North American or European cultures. As a result anything containing "good" numbers are more valuable and ones with "bad" numbers less so. We see this for watch serial numbers, license...

No.

I donā€™t attach significance so it so I wouldnā€™t pay more.

Thanks, LS! [nt]

I wouldnā€™t pay one cent more for a certain number

 By: ChristianDK : May 24th, 2020-08:48
It holds absolutely no value to me. I dont in believe numerology either. I know some do and I know in some Asian cultures numbers can hold important significance. I believe they see it differently.

Yes, it very much depends on the eyes that see, I this case.

I have been offered pieces at huge overprices because of the number. I have turned down the offerings though, since I donā€™t see it as anything else than a way to drive up the price.

It is mostly a fun factor and added collecting value maybe to have a lower number, but not something that would translate into a higher price for sure. There could be exceptions of course.

I also liked the way Zenith numbered the CP-2 for us. 1 of 50 on every model. This is what it is 1 of 50. No BS. I remember having seen that on other ltd editions too but I canā€™t remember which. On some editions like the JLC Tribute to Polaris the edition...

JLC, you expressed my thoughts! It is a ā€œfun factorā€ to have a low number! I did have a dealer try to use the ā€œlow number theoryā€ on me to purchase a watch.

In a polite way, I told them to go pound sand if thatā€™s the sales tactic they are resorting to to obtain extra money for the piece.

Nope šŸ‘Ž [nt]

Thanks! [nt]

Agreed! For something you are actually going to wear I prefer a higher number

It's like not buying the first model year of a new car šŸ˜‚

No I wouldnā€™t. After all its just a number.

If i can pick a number its fine but I wouldnā€™t pay extra for it

Okay, thx! [nt]

I would not pay more for any number

 By: sham1 : May 24th, 2020-09:48
but I do understand that some people would pay more their 'lucky' or preferred numbers.

Depends really on your definition of 'a little more'

 By: sham1 : May 24th, 2020-19:58
Personally I would not but I know the ruler of Qatar has number reserved for him at Cartier. I know this because I was given number two for my Tank Cintree and asked what happened to number one!

Yes it is definitely a psychological advantage

 By: sham1 : May 25th, 2020-07:29
to know that you have number one! Enjoy your incoming!

Ah I see!

 By: sham1 : May 25th, 2020-18:58
Well, you never know with these things. I am happy when Patek do not allocate a number to its limited editions as I am happy with H Moser stating '1 of 20' on their limited editions which I feel is a very clever way of not discriminating the numbers. Ever...

I wouldnā€™t pay more...

 By: hewitgar : May 24th, 2020-10:38
... but certainly enjoy it if I serendipitously happen to buy one with a significant number to me... which has happened a few times now

No.

 By: bchankai : May 24th, 2020-10:45
I wouldnā€™t pay more, but in full disclosure, Iā€™ve passed on watches where I didnā€™t like the number being offered(wasnā€™t a very rare watch, so I knew there would be other opportunities). So in the end, itā€™s worth something to me, but logic precludes me fro...

The number 13 might be worth an extra buck or two.

Speaking as an Italian Druid.

Yep! [nt]

I see if they have the number I liked Eg. 3, 13 and etc.

 By: iceheller 1945 āœŒļø : May 25th, 2020-01:34
If they have, I dun mind paying a bit to reserve it. If no, then I skip the watches altogether. ; )

Absolutely not...

 By: mahesh : May 25th, 2020-09:15
Iā€™m happy to see if the birthday of my son matches the number but Iā€™m no way paying a penny extra for that !

No, I would not pay

more for neither a smaller serial number nor a so called "lucky number" in a limited edition watch. However, I'll try to avoid those numbers with a negative connotation in some cultures.
