I am assuming you are using the web version.
Inside an open thread
The idea we had was to allow you to scan responses quickly when you open a thread. You need only expand threads that have the photo or document icon as there is more to read on those posts. 
Waterfall display at thread level.
There is a no picture option to go in a text mode by using the setting under the head top right.
Choose View forums as text only
This is the collapsed view.
