The Pilot Theme
Dear friends,
One of the things I like about this forum is to see people's collections develop over time.
When I first signed up, I was struck at some of the wonderful themes that some of you had built up over time, and I kind of wanted to have my own theme.
And so it all started for me late last year when I discovered the Zenith Montre d'Aeronef Type 20 Special. Securing one of the 75 piece Limited Edition Rose Gold with the beautiful 5011k movement in New York early this year, I had no idea at the time that this was, for me, to be the beginning of my very own theme. As many of you know, it was shortly after that I secured the Titanium version of the same watch from a collector and Purist in Hong Kong. A month later, I received a beautiful Zenith Mark V Cockpit watch from a collector in Portugal. And just last month, to round off the collection, I was fortunate to come across a stunning Zenith Special from the late 1920's, this time from a gentleman in Germany. This is almost exactly the watch that Louis Bleriot wore on his historic 1909 Channel crossing, and the inspiration for the modern Type 20 line.
And finally just this morning, I received a package in the post today from Denmark to round off my theme. Inside the package were two art pieces that I commissioned a couple of months ago from an extraordinary artist in Copenhagen, Cay Broendum, an extremely amiable and hugely talented chap with a passion for watches.
This completes my "theme" for now, as I have my sights on various watches from different houses. But do not be surprised if suddenly the new GMT or Annual Calendar were to join the family. It has been a thoroughly enjoyable year since first reading about the Zenith Type 20's.
