Lemania VS In-house
Hi everyone.
I wanted to ask a naive question.
As we all know PP have developed, amongst many others, their new calibers for the 5170 (first found in that ladies chrono) and a further development of that for the new Perp Chrono 5270.
What I want to understand here is why anyone would prefer a generic Lemania caliber piece over and above a genuine in-house PP caliber. I mean the Lemania's in the 5970 and 5070, although heavily re-worked in PP form, will be found in Vacherons and other high-end manufacturers... Why would you prefer an outsourced movement found elsewhere to power your PP than something made by the manufacturer? It necessarily means the lemania piece is NOT fully bespoke. I've been watching the debates between 5070 vs 5170 and 5970 vs 5270, and aesthetic objections aside, it's a no brainer - surely? An in house pp movement vs an outsourced generic? No doubt, the 5170 and 5270 have to be champions.
My feeling is that people always prefer what they have bought themselves and given that only a few people have the new pieces but many more (relatively speaking) have the older pieces here, the loyalty to what they already own is driving a unfair evaluation. That's human nature of course... But in my opinion, there is simply no arguing that the newer pieces are conceptually purer and simply more bespoke because of their in house movements. Will we find the caliber in 5170 in a Vacheron? No. And that's my point!
Please let me know your thoughts. Apologies if the post comes off "spiky" - written in a hury!! I wait to be corrected by your insight and knowledge!
Regards
MB!

Lemania vs In House

My feeling is if both were manufactured and available at the same time people would definately prefer the in house movement over the lemania but obviously they aren't. I would never trade my 5970 for a 5270 but I am in line for a 5270.

The 5070 vs 5170 or 5970 vc 5270 is not only about the movement but imo more about the asthetics I do prefer the 5070 BY far, I've seen the 5170 and it is a very nice watch. If I had the money I would buy a 5170 too ... 100% sure. But the 5070 is for me a...

Lemania movement found in 5070 and 5970 is not reworked... To my knowledge (and please correct me if I am wrong) it is disassembled, refinnnised and then reworked and reassembled... So it is a Lemania based calibre but in a Patek way..... Lemania wanted t...

and maybe not as simple as assuming that newer is always better or more desirable. Having said that, I do think the new Patek chrono movement is beautiful, technically and aesthetically. But I also feel the same about the Lemania. There are certainly tech...
Great question

Great question to which you have already received some great answers. I have yet to see the new PP manual movement, but the mere fact that it is manufactured in-house means nothing to me. Given that historically all watch movements were sourced from outsi...
