Glashutte Original Senator Chronometer - ownership review
At long last, I am pleased to share my review of the exquisite Senator Chronometer.
Officially presented on March 26, 2009 at Baselworld, I knew immediately this was a watch I wanted to own.
I have long been attracted to chronometers. As it applies to a watch, to be named a "chronometer", a watch must past an official independent testing agency's standards for precision. For the brand Glashutte Original, the Senator Chronometer is their first timepiece to be delivered with such certification.
My interest in this type of watch has always been tied to that of original marine chronometers, and the ordinary dial layout featuring a power reserve indicator at 12 and a running sub seconds indicator at 6.
Here is a sample of an original Ulysse Nardin marine chronometer from the late 1930s. It remains in perfect working order and keeps fairly accurate time, although is still in need of a replacement seconds hand which was broken when I acquired it.
The Senator Chronometer is a fascinating offering. A modern take on a classic and traditional design, with several key innovative movement features. Most notably, a novel stop seconds / reset mechanism that perfectly synchronizes the relationship between the sub seconds counter and minute hand.
The watch had an official product launch in October of 2009 in Berlin, highlighting a new marketing campaign for the timepiece "Moments, Seconds, Emotions". I took delivery of mine in December 2009. The watch received a "Watch of the Year" award in early 2010.
