3940J First Series
I have always like early Patek watches in Yellow Gold case as it truly feels like it is what it was meant to be during those time.
This one is special as it is the First Series, which I believe it 3940 was first introduced in the market as a yellow case watch.
The dial color and the subdial really make this very different from other series. Very simple and understated.

To me the 3940 well represents what Patek is all about. ( at least in my vision of the Brand). The 3970 is up there too. Pure Patek. Thanks for sharing your watch!

Certain variants of 3970 were not available in 2nd series (and 1st). Black dial, for example. Also, 2nd series is only perfect with large hallmarks...
Agree... Those variants
are few and rare. Some of them look modern so I won't really consider them 'pure'. Still, they are no doubt beautiful. PP 2526 gets my vote too as 'pure' patek
Truth is,
I have never met a 3970 that I did not like! All metals, any series, whatever. I really feel that it is a great watch in all of its different itinerations.

They are gorgeous.
It is just personal preference as I like leaf and dauphine hands. The third generation 3970 or 3940 feel a bit modern for me as I was looking for a old world feel

Very good choice. It complements the serious nature, in terms of serious complication, of the watch. Same with the 5004 in yellow gold: perfecty timeless!
3940J First Series
was manufactured in 700 copies. Besides the difference in the dial, the other technical complication and peculiarity is that the year is "jumping". Getting slippery on the other sets. ...

Also,
the 2nd generation (1st was only Beyer in 10 pieces or so) had just one case back. Depending on the source this was also the case for the later generations until approx. 1991/1992.
