Amanico introduces the Tudor Black Bay 54 Blue, a new release that revisits the popular 37mm case size first seen in the Black Bay 54 Black. His post delves into the design choices and technical specifications, offering a critical eye on its movement certification and case dimensions. This article provides valuable insights for collectors considering Tudor's latest vintage-inspired diver.

The Black Bay 54 Black was issued in 2023. The good idea was to offer to this watch a smaller ( 37 mm ) and thinner case ( 11, 24 mm, now ). The black dial is gorgeous, and gives to this watch a vintage look which reminds us of the, or should I say THE vintage reference, the 7922.

This year, Tudor comes back to this reference with a blue dial and bezel, a Tudor Blue, which we saw on the Submariners from the 70's.

The movement is the Cal MT 5400, which is " COSCED " ( -2 + 4 secs per day, from memory) , and this is my regret here, as I would love to see it even more accurate with the Master Chronometer certification. It beats at 28, 800 vph, and has a good autonomy of 70 hours.

This watch comes with a rubber strap, or a bracelet. Here, the bracelet is my choice.

Now I would have loved to see a thinner case. The movement is 5 mm high, so there is some place for a 1 or 2 mm thinner case, in my opinion. Still, this watch is really nice looking, and not over priced!

Best,

Nicolas

About the Audemars Piguet Black Bay Ref. 5400

The Audemars Piguet Royal Oak "Jumbo" reference 5400, introduced in 1972, is a foundational model for the brand and the broader luxury sports watch category. It was designed by Gérald Genta and distinguished by its integrated bracelet and octagonal bezel secured by eight visible hexagonal screws. This reference established the core aesthetic that would define the Royal Oak collection for decades, emphasizing a blend of industrial design and high-end finishing.

The 5400 features a relatively thin profile for its time, housing the ultra-thin automatic Caliber 2121 movement. The case construction, often in stainless steel, utilized a monobloc design for water resistance, with the bezel and case back secured to the mid-case. The dial typically featured a "Tapisserie" pattern, adding texture and depth, protected by a sapphire crystal.

As the original Royal Oak, the 5400 holds significant appeal for collectors interested in horological history and design innovation. Its enduring design language and technical specifications set a benchmark for a new genre of watches. Variants exist in different metals, though the steel version remains particularly sought after for its historical significance and purity of design.

Just not sure about the crown.

Unfortunately, I didn't find the BB54 nice looking on the wrist when I tried it on: the lugs seem to me to be excessively long for the restrained diameter of the dial and bezel. And this blue color is a complete departure from the vintage feel that gave the original its charm (even if the vintage feel felt a bit artificial to me). So, personally, I'm not drawn to it, unfortunately.

The original BB 54, I specifically like the gilt on the dial.

... but this color just doesn't do it for me. Something too bright or bold about this blue. I love the black one, however, as well as the recent updates to the BB58. Alas, I have the 'old' 58 but still love it.
