quattro's insightful post delves into the aesthetic evolution of Patek Philippe's Grandmaster Chime, a horological marvel known for its complexity and imposing dimensions. He meticulously compares the highly embellished 175th Anniversary ref. 5175R-001 with its undecorated prototype and the distinctive Only Watch ref. 6300A-010, inviting collectors to consider how subtle design choices profoundly impact the perception of such a significant timepiece. His analysis highlights the interplay between case decoration, dial patterns, and hand styles, offering a nuanced perspective on a watch that pushes the boundaries of haute horlogerie.

With its huge dimensions for a wristwatch (47.7 16.07 mm), the Grandmaster Chime is a beast.

And the 175th Anniversary ref. 5175R-001, with its extensively hand-engraved case and lugs, although an extraordinary and fascinating timepiece, probably felt a bit too extravagant to some of us.

However, the prototype of this watch, with its undecorated case and lugs looked quite stunning, imo.

In particular because the guilloché pattern on the dial, not being competed with by the engravings on the case, was much more visible.

Also the simple baton hands (instead of pear and leaf hands) gave it a more 'casual' look.

Also the steel version with a salmon dial ref. 6300A-010 created for the 2019 Only Watch auction was very appealing, wasn't it?

I especially like the choice of a subtly stepped bezel and of subtly stepped hinges for the lugs.

The Breguet numerals were also a nice touch, even though I didn't mind the Roman numerals of the original version.

The replacement of the undulations guilloché pattern by a hobnail pattern and of the dimples minutes track by a railroad track were aesthetically coherent choices, giving the watch a more contemporary look.

However, I have to say that I personally preferred the undulations pattern and the dimples track.

The same aesthetic choices were maintained for the white gold black dial variant, ref. 6300G-001.

And also for the white gold blue dial variant, ref. 6300G-010.

And again for the 2023 two-tonewhite and rose gold ref. 6300GR-001.

The engraved case varieties for me do not hold any appeal whatsoever. The craftsmanship might be there but the style is not one I could contemplate 🤷🏻‍♂️ The prototypes and versions with a more subdued case are more to my liking but again more a demonstration of what is possible than necessarily what I would want to wear 😉 Not that I am the target market anyway 😂 Thanks for collating all of these 👍🏻🙏🏻

I don’t like the overly engraved cases that PP (and VC for that matter) use. Not my style. Nor is the size. However, in this instance I think the rose gold with the engraving, the size of the watch, the amount of complications- all of it adds up and works in this ref.
