Comparing Both Generations of Diagono Calibro 303

Jul 25, 2011,07:36 AM

Three years after the 20th Anniversary of Bulgari Diagono, the Diagono series continues to develop and responding to the market requirements.  The modifications are improvement, which reflects well of its name Diagono, derived from the ancient Greek word "agon" meaning "competition".  To excel or survive in the challenging watch-market, is to compete with evolving design and creativity.

Let see what
BVLGARI has done to the second generation (2G)  Diagono Calibro 303 , the watch which they embarked on the journey of serious watchmaking ( please click here for the specifications ) ...

For comparison, a Diagono Calibro 303 with a electric blue dial from the 1st Generation ...

Now, the 2011 Diagono Calibro 303 (2G) .... Can you spot the changes?

2011 Diagono Calibro 303, 42mm diameter steel case with pink gold bezel ...

The inner diameter of the bezel was reduced, toning down the 'BVLGARI-BVLGARI' typeface and at the same time, increased the perimeter of the dial.
Minute-train was added onto the chapter ring which is relevant for a chronograph.

Observe more white-space around the 12H marker and the logo area.

Date window moved from position 6H to 4:30 .

Without the date window at 6H and more space at the perimeter, a SuperLuminova coated hour marker was added.
The hour-markers at 3H and 9H were lengthened too.

I prefer the old window at 6H for balance and appreciate the difficulty of  stamping a slim raised window and the accurately align to frame the date-window.
With this new change, it does not reduce the complexity too, as the stamping has to be concise so that when both layers of dials stacked together, the sides of the date-window (between the hour marker 4H and 5H) are of equal proportion.

The partially exposed adjacent date-numerals is not pleasant to me.  Subjective as some may prefer it.

Rest of the constructions like multi-layered dial, and pushers and crown remained unchanged.

Did not notice any change to the screw-down sapphire case-back.

Movement is still the robust integrated chronograph FP1185.

Next the other variation of the 2011 Diagono Calibro 303 ...

The Steel case with Steel bezel  with black galvanised theme.

Not surprise to hear it being nicknamed by some here as 'Panda' smile

Now for a comparison from the side profiles ...

The Calibro 303 with blue strap (above) is the Version 1.

The opposite side.

The 1G's case thickness is at 12.95mm while the 2G  is thinner  at 11.70 to 11.90mm.

The difference is only a small 1.05 mm, so I could not point exactly where the excess materials are trimmed.
It looks very likely removed from the under-side of the caseband.

Visually the differences could be spotted are ....

Changes with the bezel side profile.

The 2G model (bottom piece) does not have the cut-groove on it.

The chamfer of the Version 1 is more gradual and gloss polish spilled over to the side and stopped before the groove.

Whereas in the 2011 model, the groove was gone and the gloss polish stopped at the end of the chamfer.

The caseband was beefed up on the 2011 model to be flush with the crown protector.

Visually, the lugs of the 2011 model angled downward more, and the under-side of the caseband is thinner than the Version 1.

Both these modifications trimmed down the distance of the lugs to the wrist which enable the watch to sit more snugly, and reduce the gap between the wrist and watch when wear on.

Tried both of them, the 2011 model indeed seat better on my small wrist.

Wrist Shots on a gentleman's wrist  ....

It is great that BVLGARI has the Kaizen mindest, and the modifications to the case design is welcome as it improves fit.  As for the aesthetic with moving the date-window, it tend to be subjective.  One thing which I hope the design team will look into, is extending the chronograph-second-hand.  Using the same-hand short with the revised wider dial, and the tip is a bit far away from the chapter-ring for a quick accurate readout.

I do have to say I prefer V.1 of the 303, the electric blue dial is fantastic. S

Have to agree with you S, the V1 Blue is ...

stunning, with the matching dark blue straps. What if Bulgari do an electric blue V2? Kong

Don't torture an already tortured soul LoooL , I would love to compare the 2, the oversized bezel is something that is very iconic of Bulgari watches, have to see it before I could say anything, but the contrast of the blue with the brassy tone of the num...

I like 2nd Generation better EXCEPT for

the date window showing adjacent date. That just confuses the issue and is ugly. I don't really mind the window position change from 6 o'clock to 4:30 but the asymmetrical window upsets the form over function equation. All the other changes are good: thin...

Many thanks Kong for a superb review...I am torn

between the 2. I like the balance of the Gen 1 but it fitted my wrist poorly. I suspect Gen 2 will fit better but the placement of the date just throws me off. It is so near and yet so far... regards, KC

Try out ...

Hi KC Try out the 2G when in town, and see if you like it. For the 1G, the fitting, are you referring to the distance from one end of the lug to the opposite lug? Kong

Sorry for late reply....G1 fitted poorly as my wrist

is quite rounded and as such both sides of the lugs sit high and leave plenty of space in between. it just was not comfortable. Will check out G2 as suggested. HAGWE and cheers! KC

Hi Ed~ Any observations for the 2G version? It could possibly happen, as Bulgari is watching;-) Thanks for the input and viewing. Kong

hi, Kong.

Thanks for the review and great pics. I kinda like the "Panda" piece although the RG version seems to be a lot cleaner looking. Perhaps if they had made the 12H a little smaller and placed the date window under the 12 or under the logo, that would've work...

Thanks Artist :-)

Hi Bob Thanks for viewing and the inputs. Placing the date window at 12H area, may be something Bulgari has thought of... relocating the brand-name is a challenge for a chronograph dial Since the brand name already on the bezel, perhaps could remove the b...

Hi everyone. I've been looking for a successor to my Panerai Daylight PAM196 for quite some time. Last week I finally took the plunge and purchased the Sincere Limited Edition (think 100 pieces made) version of the Diagono 303 and I have to say I love it!...

Congrats Stryker!

When did you bring it home? Seen you talking about it in April. Thanks for sharing with us. Kong

Thanks

Yeah – I’ve been eyeing up this watch for about a year ever since I moved to Singapore. I had a Panerai Daylight at that time but it had broken down and took forever to get repaired. During that time I realised that almost every other person in Singapore ...

The Diagono Calibro 303 has lots of work put into it and sad to say not many people realise it. ( Not sure if you have viewed this page about the construction ). The watch world over here is interesting and it takes confidence to buy and wear a brand out ...

Yep!!

 By: Stryker : August 2nd, 2011-08:52
Yeah - that page on construction was one of the pages I found way back when I first started to research the Diagono Chrono 303. It lead me to learn about the FP 1185 Calibre movement and in turn lead me to discover some of the other fine time pieces that ...

Well said .....
