Bulgari Baselworld 2011: Presenting the New Endurer Chronosprint All Blacks Part 2

Mar 24, 2011,17:24 PM

Thanks Ping for the introduction of the new Bulgari Endurer Chronosprint All Blacks Special Edition.  This was one of the watches that we were all speculating in the past few months and it's now a reality.  It was great to handle the prototype for the Endurer Special Edition that is the collaboration between Bulgari and the famed All Blacks rugby team.

The main entrance Hall 4.0 of Baselworld is dedicated to Bulgari and it was an elegantly designed exhibition with several rooms dedicated to complications (more on this soon), the All Blacks SE, and the 125 Years of Italian Magnificence display.  After walking down the long corridor the main display  entryway, there were 4 primary display areas that showcases the current collection of Bulgari: the Bulgari-Buglari collection, Octo Bi-Retro collection, Endurer, and Serpenti.  But the most eye catching display was not the actual watches but the huge poster advertisement that extended 2 stories high with the All Blacks Special Edition.  I noticed this right away and my first question to our hosts at Bulgari was:  Is that the new Endurer? YES!

One of four primary display cases in the entry hall.  TV monitors display various collections from Bulgari, with Apple iPads uploaded with the very cool Magsonic app, and my favorite display, the Endurer.  On the left hand side is the regular production Staybrite stainless steel and the right hand side the Endurer All Blacks Special Edition.

As you can clearly see this Endurer SE includes the special rugby ball display case:

Closeups of the pre-production Endurer.  The case is stainless steel with a DLC treatment while the crown and pushers are PVD'd.  This gives a very nice subtle variation in the blackened color of the Endurer.  In addition to the DLC treatment, there are several unique features that distinguishes the All Blacks SE versus the production model introduced last year.  The anthracite dial is patterned after the Maori Koru tattoo.  The hour indices are blacked and the lume in broad daylight also takes a blackened coloration.  The chronosprint chronograph offset subdial at the 6 o'clock position is blackened as well (as opposed to the original version that has an alternating brushed silver and black color).  A closer examination finds that the 'Daniel Roth' and 'Caliber 1306' inscription has been removed on the All Blacks SE.  The BVLGARI logo has been moved above the large date indicator closer to the 12 o'clock position and is slightly curved to be consistent with the angles of the date.

The caseback remains in the Bulgari proprietary Staybrite finish but has a unique smoked transparent sapphire window to view the movement with the All Blacks silver fern logo and the 1905 year.

Wristshots of the Endurer All Blacks SE:

The lugs are designed with a downward angle to fit smaller wrists like mine:

And the crown is fully PVD'd in comparison to the original Endurer which has a silver colored center for the crown.

One of my favorite details is the rubberized strap with a DLC steel inserts.  This adds a nice touch to the watch and makes it very sport and rugged, just like the team that it represents.  Since the All Blacks SE uses the same case as the regular Endurer the rubber strap will be available in the future for owners that would like an alternative to the standard alligator strap:

Another complimenting detail is the blackened DLC tang buckle:

And how does the black hour indicators and hand tips look under a covered cloth?  A slightly bluish/green lume!  It's very easy to read in the dark even when we exposed it shortly to the incandescent lights:

The bezel has a distinctive curve that is reminiscent of a BVLGARI-BVLGARI dial:

Stayed tuned for part 3, with a video of the Endurer All Blacks SE.

Regards,
ED-209

Very cool edition for the Endurer! Seems like it fits well for smaller wrists. How was legibility of the hands with regular ambient lighting? -MW

Very legible

Hi DRMW, The hands was very legible in regular lighting. Wish I had my surefire with me (left it in the business center) otherwise I would have lit up the Enderer All Blacks for you Regards, ED-209

everyone--virtually everyone--is copying/cribbing off of AP... Hublot is the most shameless culprit, but this watch just reminds me of some variant of ROO. I do not mean to diminish the hard work of the manufacture, but Originality would help a little her...

Thanks for you thoughts Mostel. What would your ideal Bulgari watch look like? What kind of design elements would make it have more 'originality'? If you had to come up with a design for the Rugby team, how would incorporate it into a watch yet still have...

Hm. Well...

I'm not a giant fan of Bulgari, as may be apparent, but thank you for asking. I would start by looking at the first big success that Bulgari had in watches (I do not know the answer to this question, but certainly Bulgari does.) I would build on anything ...

Thanks for the input, If I understand you well, sounds like a good idea for a retro-style piece! What do you think of the Via Condotti? -MW

Well, it's a little more Bulgari at least...

I find the Via a little bland actually... oh well! I appreciate the pics and this forum very much!~

At least something out of the norm in just doing "all black" dial which we cant see the time. But not really a fan of the logo blocking the movt. Any reason to prefer PVD over DLC? Isnt DLC stronger?

Thanks takashi78 for the comments

 By: ED209 : March 26th, 2011-13:08
I like it too. I think the PVD parts on the crown and pusher are carry-overs from the original version. Regards, ED-209
