I was once in Delhi and I visited the Indian National Museum. It was a very saddening experience. Firstly, the patrons, local Indians were almost all poorly behaved, the adults were touching artifacts, the children were screaming, running, and touching artifacts. Secondly, the artifacts were almost all in need of display cases, many were just placed on a sagging desk, collecting dust, being touched by poorly behaved people. Some artifacts had a single piece of printer paper describing the item. I spoke to a friend of mine (he is a successful individual of Indian ancestry) about this and asked him why there was no wealthy patron for the museum. He said the problem was multi-fold. 1. Wealthy Indians often declare little to no income, thus paying little to no taxes. Only about 2% of the entire population pays taxes in India and much of the income of wealthy individuals are vastly underreported. Corporations are also not especially charitable in India. 2. If you are wealthy, yet claim to be not wealthy in your income statement to the government, it would look suspicious if you all of a sudden donated thousands of US Dollars to build expensive cases and cabinets for the museum. 3, and this is perhaps the saddest of all, wealthy Indians do not regard their fellow Indians with high regard; this is partially due to the caste system, and they see helping others as a form of creating inflation for all. Therefore, wealthy Indians want to invest their money in Europe or America and many simply do not care to invest much time and money in their own land.
