A tough question on so many levels

Dec 29, 2009,13:13 PM

In the alternate universe where I could actually afford to put together this "set," I'd be faced with a couple choices:

1) Should the set be a WG Tradition in order to better match with the coloring of the platinum AP?  I love both the WG and YG Tradition, but find myself more inclined toward the yellow gold of late (I generally always prefer white metals, but yellow gold is so warm, and recently I've been enamored of yellow gold examples like the JLC Duometre.).

2) Let's say I go with the YG.  The YG Tradition is awesome, but in this alternate universe of unlimited riches would I rather make a set with this watch and the AP, or bump it up to a Tradition Tourbillon in YG?  A fellow diner at the Romain Gauthier dinner I attended recently was kind enough to let me check out his Tradition Tourbillon with fusee-chain transmission and it's pretty darn cool!  The lighting wasn't great at the restaurant for pictures, so none of the photos I took of the voluptuous domed crystal in combination with the fusee-chain turned out, but the watch is so rich, and lovely.

The above questions aside, I don't know how I'd choose between the AP and the Breguet.  The Breguet gives off a more traditional (No pun intended!) air, while the AP, despite having its components all finished by hand via traditional techniques (Love the barleycorn guilloché on the mainplate!), feels very today, very á la mode.  When I look at the Breguet I feel transported to a slower time; when I look at the AP I feel very in the moment.  Neither of these two feelings is bad, just different.  Putting aside all the technical aspects of the watches and just going with aesthetics, pros for the AP over the Breguet IMO are: enamel dial, barleycorn decoration, and lovely small seconds display.  Pros for the Breguet are: much more manageable size (37mm vs. 46mm), plus COLOR (blued screws, ruby jewels, frosted yellow gold, silver dial display), as the AP is a little cold-looking.

Why do you ask such tough questions, Respo?

At the end of the day, if I could only buy one watch between the Breguet Tradition (regular handwound or tourbillon) or the AP Jules Audemars with AP escapement, I'd probably go with the AP.  It's grown on me a lot in terms of its aesthetics, and of course I'd love to experience the super high frequency oscillation of the AP balance wheel.  At least for today, I'll go with the AP.  Tomorrow, I will probably love the Breguet more!  smile

Cheers,

Daos

A poor photo of the Tradition Tourbillon I caught recently. The fusee-chain transmission is very cool in person.

A poor photo of another watch enthusiast's Tradition Tourbillon I took recently.  The fusee-chain transmission is very cool in person.

La Tradition series …

 By: AndrewD : December 28th, 2009-15:52
It’s been a while since I posted images of the 7027BA/11/9V6 La Tradition and this series was taken in the garden under the soft evening light. The view into the Cal. 507DR movement is still mesmerising. Andrew...

One of my favorite Breguets....

La Tradition is my favorite watch...

...from Breguet. Your pictures highlight what I love about the piece -- its 3D quality, the way the dial seems to be suspended within the case, the frosted movement finishing and the colorful nature of the watch in yellow gold (probably my favorite varian...

You read my mind, Daos

But which do you prefer between the two: the AP or the Breguet? respo

Skeletons in the closet …

 By: AndrewD : December 29th, 2009-15:39
Hi Daos, Well, perhaps not skeletons; how about "open face"? Here are a few random responses to the points you make: I approve of your choice of the YG Tradition. Generally I prefer the warmth of rose gold, but Breguet have come up with a unique alloy for...

Ok, Andrew, those are just stunning!

I have to say, I actually prefer this style of watch presented in the Millinery case. Just a few more reasons for me to swoon over AP. Cheers, respo

The coup de grace …

Here then is the coup de grace, Respo, to put you out of your misery. The AP Tradition of Excellence Cabinet Piece No. 5 in 47mm Millenary case...

Yes, please. I'll take one! [nt]

I would love the PanoInverse as an ancillary to this "set" also

 By: dxboon : December 29th, 2009-22:20
I find the PanoInverse hits me in the same spot emotionally as the La Tradition and the Jules Audemars AP Escapement. The Pano doesn't have quite the same open feeling as do the other two, but that sensation of being reversed and exposed is there. The AP ...

Am I dreaming or ...?

 By: amanico : December 29th, 2009-22:33
We are more and more to appreciate this PanoInverse? I absolutely concur. The PanoInverse can co exist with a Breguet La Tradition, as they share the same philosophy, but the Lange is maybe a more modern looking watch. I love both of them, and funnily, I ...

I think the PanoInverse is destined for greatness

 By: dxboon : December 30th, 2009-00:22
I have always thought so, and continue to believe it is an underappreciated member of the GO family. There's something very compelling about the exposed double swan-necks and the gorgeously engraved butterfly balance bridge. The watch is also very colorfu...

Agree, Sister

 By: amanico : December 30th, 2009-00:29
If you add this amazing blend of Tradition and Modernity, I think that G.O has a winner with this watch... I love a lot the idea which consists in enhancing the double swan neck on the dial, too, and the original design of the watch. Will try to find one ...

Love those.

I could look at them all day long....

Wow, Daos

 By: respo : December 29th, 2009-18:36
...you really complicated things with the addition of that Tradition Tourbillon with fusee-chain transmission into the mix. (By the way, are ALS and Breguet the only two manufafturers that make this kind of fusee-chain transmission?) And then Andrew furth...

The Cabestan also has a fusee mechanism

 By: dxboon : December 29th, 2009-22:52
Here's some pictures of the watch from a post of Don's from Baselword '09 I believe: click here . Cheers, Daos

Thanks for the additional information.

 By: respo : December 30th, 2009-05:35
Well, the Cabestan is not appealing to me in teh way that the ALS and Breguet are, so at least that one does not complicate matters any more than they already are. LOL. respo

Beautiful watch, i noticed the links sure are big..

 By: doubleup : January 9th, 2010-14:22
.. in comparison to say, the PLM fusee mechanism, do you think its because the circumfance of the wheel they are wraping around is larger on this watch so they can or just easier to do? I think the PLM chain alone is a marvel in itself. This watch is on m...

I love a lot this " sculptured " dial

 By: amanico : December 28th, 2009-23:28
Your pics nicely show which is a very strong point, on the Tradition, these multi levels on the dial, which look like a sculpture. A fascinating outcome, indeed, which makes me think that this Tradition is my favourite Breguet. Thanks for this post, Andre...

Love this Bregeut....

Hi AndrewD, Nice pics of your La Tradition. It's my favorite Breguet as well and a watch that I wear quite often. I've seen and handled all the variations including the newer ones, however I still prefer the YG manual wind 7027: Happy Holidays, ED-209...
