Flying on the water…

Well, to continue my trip down 65th Birthday Street, here is one from my youth.

1969 was a very good year for me.  I was all of 14 years old, wearing a Rolex 5500 Air-King, and piloting one of these.  I thank my Father every day.

These photos are from the web, and mine was just like it.  It’s a Don Aronow creation (Formula, Donzi, Magnum, Cigarette): the Maltese Magnum Missile 16.

At the time, this was just about the fastest thing on the water.  It would do over 60 MPH, and back then, that was all you needed to be the king of the hill.

It’s a miracle I lived through that summer.

I want it back…  even if for only a day.

Here is a modern video of a restored Missile in action.  If really does fly over the water.  What a Beast!

All the best…  HEO

Your dad was pretty liberal allowing you as 14 year old to pilot one of these. But man it looks great!!! So when is D Day exactly where you’ll hit 65?

My Father and Uncle had a side business in New York in the summer. They would rent boats to city folks. This ran from about 1961 to 1964. It was a disaster. People who knew nothing about boats going out for the day. Now, this is all before credit cards. S...
