Electric vehicles vs gasoline vehicles in China

Thank you for reading and commenting!

The vast majority of personal cars in China are gasoline cars.  But the funny thing is that using electric cars in China may not necessarily improve the air vs gasoline cars.

1.  Gasoline cars in China are not as "clean" as gasoline cars in USA and Western Europe.  The country doesn't require car manufacturers to install the "cleanest" versions of the vehicle's exhaust systems in the Chinese market.  Generally Japan, Western Europe, and USA cars have very clean exhaust management systems.  These systems cost more to build because they're more complex and have more special materials (special elements like platinum are used in the exhaust system and catalytic converter of gasoline cars).

2.  Electric cars in China use electricity that is generated is mostly from coal.  Approximately 47%+ of the entire electricity supply is generated from coal.  Per kilometer of travel; a Tesla in China on average is likely more pollutive than an equivalent gasoline vehicle!

With nearly 19% of the world population living within China, and each one of those people increasing their energy demands every day as China races to become a modernized country, we can only hope that the country will make it an economic priority to preserve the environment and start enacting legislation, rules, laws, and standards that will protect this planet for the generations to come!

You should see hydrogen production...

It takes a lot of electrical energy to split the hydrogen atom from the oxygen atom in water to get just hydrogen. Hydrogen is mostly made through solar powered sources, but there's still opportunity cost. That power could be used elsewhere! Like my air c...

After 8 years op operation a (at least a Tesla) is cleaner than an ICE car. According to studies.

It's more complex than that. It depends on the source of electricity...

If the electricity generated was from a very pollutive source (such as coal), then Tesla might not necessarily be the cleanest to operate. At least 47% of China's electrical production is from coal. But generally, on average, in the West, Tesla should be ...
