Audi TT first generation.

Certainly one of the cars I regret the most.

I had the first generation, bought in Sept 1999, the 1, 8 180 HP. Despite the modest power, it was fun to drive, very living on the road.

A true character. A future Classic?

Here are some pictures I found on the net. ( Credit Carsandclassic )

The Concept, in 1995:

The 1,8 225 HP, not necessarily funnier to drive, due to the extra weight...

And the 6 Cyl 3, 2 250 HP, if my memory serves me well....

I much prefer the original line, which I find very Bauhaus, original, less clinical than the current ones.

That was such a lovely car!

Best,

Nicolas

Design classic

However rather unsafe to drive at high speed. I’ve got some unpleasant memories of TT becoming “light” on the rear axle. Audi cured that issue with the rather ungainly rear spoiler. Regards, George

Absolutely, Nicolas.

Hence the word "üngainly".

Dear Nico, good old days!!!

I was much younger and I got like you a 1.8l 180HP... only 2 wheel drive (the front ones...) It was my first “company car”, what a TT like a company car, yeees we are Italians... 😂😂😂 I remember that I choose the color on the Audi website, it was a weird c...

Interesting comparison...

Back then I test drove the TT against a number of cars in that class. The main issue with the MK1 for me was the skid pad. At between .85-.9 it was a little disappointing. I landed up going with a Z. Even against cars twice the price (Porsche Cayman etc.)...

Totally agree 1st Gen

I drove two versions

The first generation was courtesy of a lease. The only thing that took getting used to was the view out the rear window. But I have to admit, when I was driving I rarely looked back.

In total agreement! [nt]

My wife still loves it

She is still first owner of a black TT from 2000. And she loves it! For the even in details consequent design, and for its practical sides, f.e. the really big back compartment when you put the back seats down.

Everything rounded...

Yep. The use of aluminum, the round fresh air outlets, the instruments... it‘s indeed a kind of total work of art. One of the very few examples of a concept car which was produced in series without a lot of compromises.

Neat looking

I agree with others opinion that it was good looking, but I found the terminal understeer frustrating. I knew someone with the baseball glove interior that was really sharp.

On the front drive or the 4 wheels? [nt]

It was over a decade ago

I can’t be certain if that car was a fwd or awd, but most Audis I’ve driven have had similar handling dynamics. One awesome exception was a R8 where the owner removed the front drive so it was a V10 mid engine RWD monster.
