Jokes aside, when I'm in Italy I live in a reasonably good neighborhood of a reasonably safe city in the North (Genova)....but even then, you do regularly hear first-hand of thefts and robberies.
Nothing serious has happened to me personally, but I'm taking more precautions than I did, say, only five years ago, when the situation was *visibly* safer in Italy. Storing your watches at home, no matter how (relatively) secure the location, is tantamou...
