In a similar vein, although to me even more ludicrous; It does appear these days that although you buy a watch, you no longer truly own it all.
When it comes to service items, some companies charge you for the new part, but refuse to return the old part (which you bought with the watch, so it really is yours)
Also, From this same company who I had that issue with, I have also had to return a whole watch to them in order for them to supply a new screw for the bracelet. This involves transportation, insurance and the possibility of damage when all I want is an external spare part. This has now happened twice with the same company so unfortunately, although I love what they make, I will no longer be buying one of their products again.
By the way, the above is not for an AP product, just highlighting the high handed approach many of these companies now adhere to. Customer is right, no not really!!
