The Audemars Piguet Chronograph is in the middle in terms of thickness, whereas the two Patek Philippes are on the thin side or the thick side. The 5712 is quite thin, whereas the 5980 is quite thick.
Also, the 5712 is not waterproof (only water resistant to 60M which I wouldn't even submerge in water). The 5980 is waterproof and I would swim in.

I actually like the off-set, unbalanced dial tremendously.
It gives it a unique look this is why I admire ALS designs very much as well. I'd choose either the 5712r or the AP. Good luck in your choice :)
