A very passionate review Foversta

Your photos and words bring this beauty to life for those of us who can only dream, but your honestly on the lack of novelty and price points for special pieces from Lange are right on point and disturbing for mortal enthusiasts. I also think you are right that this strategy is also not good for Lange long term. They do need to invest in entry level models and create real appeal here. Off the top of my head some nice pieces but recent misses are the 1815 anniversary platinum and black dial - no new movement and no enamel dial, the RL PLM black dial non enamel (in retrospect perhaps should not have released) and the 1815 hommag  with central and subsidiary seconds should have been given an enamel dial at the same price point 50,000. All three pieces I just mentioned I really like by the way, but a missed opportunity at greatness. In Lange's defence other prestigious brands are even worse offenders, however as our favourite brand we want more integrity.

Conversely though the triple split is deadly in the best possible way. Maybe it should have been platinum and maybe some will criticize the size, but this watch is an undeniable work of functional art. I fear Lange will also release it in platinum and rose gold thus diluting the prestige and novelty. They would do so much better to leave it as this 100 piece one off and move on to the next masterpiece. My two cents anyway.

Great review. Thank you so much.

Hands on review of the Lange & Söhne 1815 Tourbillon enamel dial

The Lange & Söhne 1815 Tourbillon was unveiled 4 years ago. It seemed to be the most simple tourbillon watch from the Saxon manufacture and yet it was characterized by the joint presence of two important technical features: the stop-tourbillon mechani...

I also feel that this piece is more of a display of Lange technical capabilities and somehow lacks the warmth and intimacy of earlier Lange pieces. And of course the pricing is way out for normal collectors like me.

except maybe about the 1815 WL which is a very demanding watch due to its specific movement. And you are right with the Triple Split. Thanks! Fx

Nice pictures and honest review....

This trend not only applies to Lange but to other prominent brands, for example, Patek as well. In the early 2000's one could get a very beautiful and well-crafted watch around $10-$15k or a perpetual calendar around $35k and would be extremely proud wear...

Thanks for your comment!

Honestly, I am not a fan of hidden tourbillons. In that case, I don't see the point. They are basically useless in a wristwatch so if on top of that you don't see them... For exemple, I don't understand the presence of the tourbillon on the Lange One PC.

Thanks for the review, FX

As usual, spectacular pictures and a very well articulated comment. A bit harsh on Lange, but as we say "qui aime bien chatie bien. In all honesty, I don't think they are anywhere nearly as complacent as Patek when it comes to entry level models. But perh...

I think in the end you are right, we have come to expect too much...

But we have been very badly accustomed by Lange from 1994! ;-)

Times have changed very quickly in the last few years

The US mortgage crisis is imho the reason why the books of Lange and others went bannanas. To compensate losses, also future losses, the only trick was raising prices. Patek was most daring by doingt so. There are still very, very nice entry Langes ... bu...

Thanks for this wonderfully detailed piece, Fx...

By coincidence, I was able to see this piece in person at a boutique several months ago. I agree with the points you raised in your review. It's nice enough -- a fine, respectable tourbillon -- though not a model that is innovative or breathtaking in any ...
