It is a trick that Lange uses on several of their watches to make them look slimmer than they actually are.
Doesn't work so well on the wrist ... The DS is a gorgeous machine, but in my opinion so top heavy that it can't be worn comfortably.

Yes.. a few Lange models have this problem with the case

It was designed to disguise
the actual thickness of the case.. if the lugs were lowered, the bezel part of the case would look really thick
MDT, it's a feature of Lange's chronographs and highly-complicated watches.
I wouldn't call it a flaw. The case recesses into your wrist and appears thinner than it is whilst you are wearing it. Meanwhile, the lugs spring from the top of the case and do not appear too deep. I'm used to it and love it: German engineering!

... and certainly preferable to have an even larger PT case. It does need some counterbalance so I wear my DS with a PT deployant to create it. Best Andreas
