What's Richard Mille for me...

Oct 14, 2015,23:40 PM

Thank you Mark, you've put in a few lines what's RM for you.

I can't add comments nor pictures, basically because I've never had the opportunity to try a RM, even if their AD is just a short step from my home.

When I've heard for the first time about RM, more then a decade ago, they was defined "The Formula 1 of wachmaking" or "Hi-Tech luxury". We should agree that many quick definition are insufficient to explain something and in this case it's more true than ever, since RM is far more.

And yet, when I started to widen my knowledge for watches, strangely enough I've fallen in the bad and wrong perception you have cited: "a RM tonneau-shape looks only very similar to another RM tonneau-shape". And I stopped follow the brand's evolution.

However, in recent years I went back to appreciate RM, for various reasons:
- all of their research isn't and end in itself;
- they've intentionally chosen to compete in a league of their own;
- they had success above all thanks to their arguments and not only for their marketing;
- they've decided to steadily remain faithful to the inital choices in terms of design, without any turnaround.

That said, I applaude RM, even if their watches will remain absolutely out of reach for me. At least, this will mean that I could look at them with complete serenity! ;-)

Ciao,

Elio

My thoughts about the original Richard Mille RM035 and the brand

By: Mark in Paris : October 5th, 2015-16:05
Dear Purists, The Richard Mille RM035 was unveiled in 2011 and produced during around 2 years and is named after its RM027 cousin. In many ways it is an exceptional Richard Mille, especially regarding its price range in the catalogue. I'm a great fan and ...

And IMHO this is the best looking RM full stop. Thank you also for the review, and for bringing life with it to light. Definitely one for the far in the future wish list.

Indeed it is a question of taste and of wrist size as well

Thanks a lot for the very kind words. I thought these watches are rare enough to at least share an experience and point of view! Cheers, Mark

Agree fully :)

And one needs to be prepared and informed for when the time and possibility comes

You're right, that's how I work too

Secondarily, it helps making less mistakes. Cheers, Mark

Interesting

Mark, Very interesting to hear your approach to assessing which RM is best for you, and happy to hear this RM035 has maintained its beauty in your eyes over the years. Your thoughts and photos are very good to read. Believe it or not, my first experience ...

My pleasure Colton and I'm glad you liked it :)

I know you appreciate the brand, so it started with this one? That's a great reference indeed to discover the brand's qualities. As fo the strap, I must say I love this one as it extends the case's shape is a perfect way. I also prefer the honeycomb patte...

Great report mark and spot on

I totally agree with your approach and I do share the same attitude towards Richard Mille But there\'s one additional factor for me and that is the MAN himself I had the pleasure of meeting drinking and dinning with Richard a couple of times all in paris ...

Glad you enjoyed it

Yes, you're right: I've seen several videos of his interviews and talk to him a few minutes, he is a true aesthete and very direct man to discuss with. Yes the RM010 is a fantastic RM. I like many aspects of this ref (skeletonized dial, rotor, lightness a...

Great Feature - Thank You Mark

I'm teetering on the edge of an RM035 purchase and this may well tip me over. Are other strap options available for the 35 ... Would those available for the RM010 fit ? I think the only real contender for me at the moment is an RM030 in either Ti or one o...

Straps availability

By: Mark in Paris : October 8th, 2015-15:45
First, thank you P, I'm glad you liked it! About the strap, the only alternative I was informed of, 1 year ago, was the Kevlar strap. It is the kind of strap which was used with the original RM027 at first and, then, adapted to the RM035. I don't think th...

Aesthetically, Richard Mille is not my absolute favourite brand, but I cannot argue ...

 By: Ornatus-Mundi : October 14th, 2015-07:23
that this brand is following a very clear technology, materials and design path. In doing so, RM does not stop short before seemingly immense hurdles* are tackled. This earns them my unconditional respect. Moreover, together with De Bethune I would count ...

Watchmaking progress

By: Mark in Paris : October 18th, 2015-15:05
I totally share your opinion on that matter. Of course, there is room for more traditionnal work too. However, as for those 2 brands you mention, they are very much into bringing progress and horology in the 21st century. Thanks a lot for your comments Ma...

It is a good thing to remain curious and open in the watchmaking world

By: Mark in Paris : October 15th, 2015-03:02
I experienced it myself. Sometimes it doesn't work of course, but many times I discovered something I was going to miss. I read your answer to Magnus' De bethune article and I see you have this curiosity to give the chance to change your mind. It is a rea...

RM brand

 By: tom2517 : October 18th, 2015-22:41
To me it\'s a brand that came at a right time and perfect marketing. RM started with making nothing themselves, even the famous case was outsourced, they just do design. Now that they make the case in house, but the movement still outsourced. It is such a...

Good strategy

By: Mark in Paris : October 19th, 2015-14:18
I think this strategy came, from the beginning, from Richard Mille's mind and personal taste concerning cars etc. The watches he wanted have been conceived exactly from his tastes and the marketing came later on to introduce it to the market (in a very cl...

RM035, this particular model is one that I hope to acquire some day. to my smaller wrist size, I think this size is perfect fit and most comfortable. it is a great looking watch! ...

The size matters a lot

By: Mark in Paris : January 14th, 2016-16:40
I think it changes the wearability so much, but also the aesthetical look. Thank you Kunmoo! Cheers, Mark

technical question

Great review Mark! I just learned two new facts of my watch that I didnt realize up until now which is great because it always got me wondering. Would be very helpful if you could further explain: Could you explain how to look at the twin barrel display t...

Thank you Lee :)

Welcome on PuristSPro by the way and congratulations for getting this reference. When you look at the twin barrels from the front side, we can see that the movement is fully wound when the coils are all toward the center (axle). When the watch is not work...

finally figured it out!

Phenomenal review

 By: keks : September 20th, 2016-12:04
I note you mention the RM035 Americas is different size and has a different caliber from the RM035. Do you happen to know whether the case materials are different?

Thank you very much keks :)

By: Mark in Paris : September 29th, 2016-14:27
I'm glad you could enjoy it. About the America, it is made of TZP Ceramic for the bezel and caseback while the caseband is made of NTPT. Quite a great combination Cheers, Mark

Thank you!

One of my favorite RM's! An absolute beauty and pleasure to wear.

My pleasure!

By: Mark in Paris : September 29th, 2016-14:28
We share the same opinion indeed. The wearing experience is really something very unique and that's also why I love wearing RM watches so much, even when big. Cheers, Mark

how do you think the potential aftersale problem of the 035 case?

 By: Ranger1 : April 15th, 2017-03:22
first of all, I am also a fan of RM035. I think the size of this watch is perfectly showing the beauty of RM and super light at the same time. as you said, the case was welled treated with a coating material. I should say, it's looks great, but the proble...

Well, I never had problems with mine

By: Mark in Paris : April 15th, 2017-03:49
but I tried to be very careful. I don't think it can be scratched, like steel or PVD/DLC (unless it takes a more significant hit). However, it can indeed mark, living a kind of grey line and I don't know if it is easy to correct. Back then, I was told tha...
