it is fascinating to see the spectra of reactions elicited by the three...
I have been waiting for a Railmaster reissue. I have never seen the original in the flesh, and did not even know it was 38 mm or manual wind (although I might have guessed the latter). I own a steel SM300 MC, which I purchased almost exactly 2 years ago, the time it took to arrive at an AD shop (one year after its Baselworld 2014 debut). It is my daily wear, and I have grown accustomed to the thickness, and think the 41 mm is fine.
I am assuming that the actual dial size of the new 60th anniv Railmaster and Seamaster 300 are identical, despite the case dimensions of 38 and 39 mm respectively. Both watches contain the same 8806 movement. So the difference is case dimensions is due to the Seamaster's bezel. And I have not yet seen any case thickness size of either of these two pieces. How much thinner will they be than my SM300 MC (thickness 14.65mm)? Also, what is the water resistance of the Railmaster? Is it going to be the same as the AquaTerra series (150m)? I hope. But one comment said that the Railmaster will not have a screw down crown.
Would a Railmaster case of 39 mm with appropriately upsized true dial been better? I will never know. I do know that I had thought 39-40 mm would be the sweet spot for this watch. Happily, though, 38mm should fulfill my bucket list for a vintage sized watch without the vintage mechanism service worries, having the benefits of a modern, new and truly antimagnetic movement!
As I began, I have been hoping for the Railmaster, and I will buy one. I called my local OB this morning, was told that I was first on their reservation list, and gave them my desired number out of 3557. I was told that the computer system was not yet taking orders, and they would call me when it can.
I await reactions to my thoughts from my friends, esp. Amanico and Nilomis!
Best, Marc
