I can't help but laugh as I confess that my face and physical features don't bear up to the beauty of the HM1.
I wish I looked a tad "better".
However, on a serious note... I admit that I took a dramatic leap of faith in Max Busser's taste, judgement and knowledge to put an order for an HM1 more than a year ago..before I could even touch the actual watch.
Max has incredibly astute and wise judgement, I chose the word "wise" in contrast to "clever", because Max is a long term visionary...I have had the chance to discuss Vianney, Opus 3 to 5 and also Peter SM work with Max since his days at HWRT.
Those were radical works.
Also, we shared opinions on cars such as the Facel Vega and the various RR and TVR Grifs...I gathered that he made a wise decision to go for an extreme machine, a total movement, and then worry about the casing and sizing "after" the problems of tech and mech were solved.
The HM1 is more difficult to accept because of one factor, the size...in all other departments, such as integrity of design and purpose, finish, execution, etc etc..it works.
Size. My initial judgement was "what the hell"...I will just wear it and grin.
I was wrong.
It is totally wearable, and I don't have to "bear with it". Physically, and more important, practically..it is good and a great pleasure to actually wear ON the wrist, not OFF.
It is a TAD LIGHTER than Opus 5.
It does not swing around the wrist, even when loose.
Would I still buy one if I had no other tourby yet? The answer today is YES. It has in the small space of just a week..brought MORE joy and light BACK to my life within the confines of watch collecting, which any of you guys can imagine..is very saturated with watches at my present level.
I had thought to myself that nothing can make me drool after 2005....I was wrong. TWO watches did...the MBF HM1 and the Breguet chain & fusee....period.
Thanks to SJX, Harry, Alan Teo, Mike Tay, Rosemarie, Jim, and most of all...Max...for bringing this watch to the attention of the body of collectors worldwide.
