I have bought watches because someone I like and admire endorses the adverts. They don't even have to buy the watch themselves nor to assemble them. I particluarly like the ones that just so happens to be on the wrist of Celeb XYZ. The most effective ones are by Cartier and Breguet. Although, Breguet has some problem because the oil painter needs to be quick to capture their clients' watch. At least Cartier had cleints in the photography age like JFK, Jackie O and R.Valentino.
I prefer if they are good looking people and especially attractive women. If its good enough for them, its good enough for me.
After all, if all watches are about the same these days, with mass manufacturing and commonly available materials, technique and workers who can be head-hunted; then the only differentiation must be in the advertising. If they don't tell me the story, how do I base my decision? Surely not by 2nd hand opinion from an anonymous person on the Internet?
It does not mean that I buy every watch with a good advert nor never buy a watch without an advert. But it helps to have a good advert. That's how I buy my TV, Hi-Fi, cars and hamburgers too. The most important sense is sight so the advert must have a picture to imprint iin my memory. If they are selling watches, I want to see the watch.
Finally, I'm not annoyed by the "Since the dawn of time....." adverts if really 'since the dawn of time' nobody has done that before.
