I'm so depressed ...

Apr 04, 2017,13:00 PM

I stopped by my local Volvo dealer to have a look at the new V90XC Cross Country.

I've been waiting a long time to replace my current XC70, it's 2 generations previous to this one. Sadly, I'd say it's not going to happen.

This new car is $65-70k sticker price ($20k more than the F-Pace I drove last weekend), but I don't like it as much as my current car.

It looks pretty enough in the pictures, but what they don't show is the claustrophobic feeling of this vehicle.

Windows are much smaller. Door openings are much smaller. My father-in-law can barely get into the current car - if you have more than size 11 shoe, you'll have trouble too. I banged my shins on the higher door sill twice - one exiting the passenger side after the obligatory "I'll drive it off the lot" business, and once climbing out of the driver's side.

The rear windows are much smaller than the ones on my car, and the sills in the back are very high and very encroaching on the load space... probably because they contain a self-raising tailgate mechanism, and a self-covering cargo area cover. Neither of which appeals to me.

Further cramping the car is the extremely high central console - as you can see in the picture it's elbow height which is 3-4 inches or more higher than mine. Add to that the fact that you can't possibly rest your elbow on the window sill (4 inches too high) ... well I suppose no one opens their windows on a sunny day but me. Even the salesman agreed the sill was too high, and I had the seat raised all the way (I'm 5' 10" / 178cm).

Finally, the dash top is high and covered with a black mouse fur substance which adds a gloomy feel, and between the rear view mirror and the windscreen is a large blob of plastic containing cameras, lidar sensors, etc. for eventual self-driving capability, which increases the claustrophobic atmosphere.

The engine is now only a 4-cyl vs the previous 5 & 6 cylinder engines. It does have more power than mine, at 316 vs 210, but it doesn't idle well (or quietly). It drones and vibrates in a way unbecoming a $65,000 car with few options.

Here are some comparison specs I just dredged up:

OLD
3700 lbs
24 mpg ave 100k miles
72 cu ft cargo
186" length
109" wheelbase
39.3" headroom
legroom same

NEW
4220 lbs
22-30 claimed
54 cu ft cargo
194" length
116" wheelbase
37.8" headroom
legroom same

So it's 7-8 inches longer, weighs 14% or 520 lbs! more, has 3/4 the cargo space, 1.5 inches less headroom -- and it costs 50% more than my loaded XC70 which also has a bevy of airbags, twin-pane glass, AWD, every option in the book. And it's no nicer to drive.

Hmmmm - I'm going to be looking elsewhere.

Best, Mahesh., ...

I know the looks are challenging...

But it was a brilliant car!

By the way, I liked this Multipla ...

... because it was design without compromise. Such cars are far too rare in the homogenous mass ... Marcus

For $65~70K, I'll get a BMW X5 3.5....lots of option with this price range.

I rented an XC60 while in Germany/Prague/Vienna last June and it's quite pleasant. Anyway, I'm biased because I'm not a wagon, minivan type of guy. Rgds Raymond

Well....

what about the XC90? Or VW Touareg?

That's good philosophy! [nt]

Lots of new product coming. If you can live with it the following might be worth waiting for: Audi SQ5, 2018 (might be labeled 2019) BMW X5 due in the fall this year or spring next year, Land Rover Discovery 5, Range Rover Velar, Mercedes E 400 Wagon, Vol...

Do they discount as heavily it the US as here?

 By: KMII : April 4th, 2017-20:40
Fully agree with you that their sticker prices are very bold but here they are accompanied by industry leading discounts - otherwise they do not sell a thing. And spaciousness seems to be a thing of the past for Volvo. The S/V 60 were the first ones truly...

At once....

surprised and not surprised with your decision! After diligently elaborating on the reasoning it does inevitably make sense not to purchase the car. Haven't driven it myself although I did enjoy driving both the XC90 and S90. Thanks I guess for the sentim...

Cars should be made lighter, faster and more fuel efficient. And I expect better ergonomics with each generation. If you do not feel this is the case with your preferred Volvo model - there are plenty of other great options. The SUV market never had wider...

At least I'm not the only one who seems to realize these Volvo's are getting more cramped on the inside

I have a 12 year old S60 - and when looking at the current model, it just seems to be a lot more claustrophobic when I'm in it. Strangely though as the car actually looks much larger on the outside.

I am thinking that

But then my wife drives to Los Angeles and calls back with "I have a Check Engine light on, what should I do?" And when the tail lamps and signal lamps are constantly going out, and radio stopped working and the self-dimming rear view mirror goes all dark...

Don't you compare apples and peaches?

Aside your SUV, this is simply a station wagon with higher ground clearance. I realized the same when I compared the XC60 with the V60 Cross Country: two different worlds. The XC90 is really a very large and spacious car. I concentrated on the trunk areas...

Good old axe design ;) [nt]

Yes, I want a boxy station wagon with AWD (see photos here)

Things I transport tend to be long, like a tandem bicycle, or a kayak. So I want long, low, wide - but with a little off-road competence. Maybe this is what I need? ...

How about someting like this?

It was good enough for Paul Newman. Sorry the pics won't load for me.

Yes, the Paul Newman Volvo would suit me, or perhaps

 By: cazalea : April 5th, 2017-10:59
this ipd concept wagon would be my first choice ... but it was well north of $100k. I suppose I could just hack up my existing car and make myself one ...

At least for the first 100 miles ...

Not the same, Mike, but

nice discounts to be had on the Mercedes Benz GLE at present. CaliforniaJed

Another consideration...

Take a look at the Audi Q7 or the new Q5...Expensive as well but great driving vehicles.

I've heard good things about the Audi but it's over 5000 lbs!

 By: cazalea : April 7th, 2017-07:51
That\'s just so extravagant to move 5000 lbs of metal to shift people from A to B. As a disciple of Colin "simplify and add lightness" Chapman, my fleet is featherweight, like this: 1235 lbs Citroen 2CV 1386 lbs Citroen van 1530 lbs Lotus Elan S4 1880 lbs...

It might be a contender. Mike

Take a look at the Macan!

Porsche Macan S and the Mercedes-Benz GLC43 are catching my eye. Plus easier serviceability as there are more Porsche and Mercedes dealers than Volvo dealers. All modern cars are going to have higher dashboards and window sills in the interior for safety ...

I was disappointed with the new Volvo. It doesn't look like the sort of car you can drive hard and put away hot. But then just for fun we went and drove the Chevy Bolt (all electric) and there wasn't anything I could complain about. What a fun car! Of cou...

I went to the Volvo dealer again today, with my wife

We talked to the salesman, learned more about the V90XC which I reviewed in April, and decided AGAIN that we didn't like it very much. Being almost as old as me, he said, "That's ok, lots of people in our age group don't like it very much. " He then said,...
