Doublematic

The Doublematic is a watch I am sort of surprised was not more popular. In my mind, the IWC Big Pilot launched the popular pilot aesthetic and is rightfully an icon. The GO Navigator is a delightful take on the style incorporating their Panodate feature. Obviously chronographs in the Pilot style are abundant on the market, as are world timers.
With the Zenith Doublematic one gets all those features with the addition of a mechanical alarm. The alarm function is exceptional too. The crown with integrated pusher is an ergonomic delight. The on/off button is easily manipulated with one’s thumb, and the crown rolls easily with just the fore finger.
Initially I found the 30 minute chronograph lacking for tasks such as timing a flight, but I learned a trick. Instead of using the alarm hand to set the alarm, align it with the hour hand when starting the chronograph to allow timing of longer intervals. Of course the on/off indicator at 8:00 assures one won’t set off the alarm inadvertently.
One criticism I have to agree with is that the red numbers on the evening segment of the world time ring are difficult to read in anything buy bright conditions. Another comment is that the alarm is faint; this may be a blessing since my wife does not appreciate the volume of my Amvox 1 alarm!
