I also have the same issue with the strap. Did you try replacing the deployant buckle with tang on the nato? That worked initially but then the tail became too long and was dangling. I am currently wearing it with a after market nato strap. Looking forward to seeing your strap choices!

Got to experiment a bit on the straps. I only found a brown alligator in 22x18 so far. I guess I'll try it out first.

I punched a hole on the NATO
and the end was dangling so Bill suggested that I fold the end back. Now it looks like a real military style strap. ...

I was thinking of punching another hole too but wasnt sure where i would go get a perfect hole punch as I had failed couple times with my ad previously. Maybe i should explore that option once again!
Punching the hole was a bit tricky
The fabric frays at the edges after you punch through. I learned that I could use a soldering iron to "sear" the edges! Another great tip from Bill!
