Earthquakes are not all the same

Some shake up and down, some in a wave motion, some left and right, some back and forth. This was back and forth, because the epicenter was about 50km away and fairly shallow at 3km deep under the Pacific Ocean the shorter slave pendulum was also effected, this is the first time I have recorded an earthquake on the slave pendulum.
I did record the big earthquake in Mexico a few months ago but as it was 2500km away the reading was not as dramatic and it may have been on a different sesmic plate too.
Most commmon pendulums will not even record such an event, however a high pecision, highly accurate pendulum will.
The more accurate a pendulum is made the more likely it is to behave, at times, like a seismograph !
During winter when the soil is wet and vibrations travel further I am able to record large trucks crossing the bridge over the Santa Ynez river on the 101 freeway which is about 1/2 mile away. There are many more stories I have associated with precision pendulums and outside interferences on accurate timekeeping.

What a 4.3 earthquake looks like on a MicroSet graph

Today at 20.38.51 UTC, in the Pacific Ocean 30 Km South West of Lompoc, California, there was an eathquake of 4.3 magnitude at 3km depth. I felt this one as the house shook slightly sideways. The left graph is from the Free pendulum of (D)W5, No.5. The re...

No surprise that the clock noticed, but fortunately for us you had your MicroSet running

Thanks for reporting this - it's interesting to see how sensitive our devices are. Cazalea

To make such a big difference in the amplitude it must have been pretty powerful. The frequency of the quake obviously coupled better to the fast slave pendulum. Although there are quakes in the Alps with great regularity I have never felt one here in the...
