Visit VC part 2
In my post yesterday regarding our visit to Vacheron Constantin in Geneva I mentioned a topics that we discussed with VC and that has been covered here. I have been asked to further elaborate around it some more.
Regarding winding direction the experts was clear that there is no harm done to a VC watch winding it back and forth however it is not the most efficient way of winding a manual watch. The most efficient way is doing it forward only and remain with your index finger on the crown and dont let the crown move lightly backward after each turn. I have been practising this and agree totally specially with my 1921 that I for I while had problems reaching the full power reserved.
When setting the watch the ideal is to move it forward. There is a slight increase on the tear and wear of the watch setting it backwards, however no real harm. I admitted that if I just want to do a minor correction of let say 1-2 minutes because it was a little a head of the correct time I do it backwards. He said with a grin "you may do that"!
On automatic production versus manual it was more of an interesting discussion were we were shown super manual work on for example advance MR watches being made as well as Perpetual. But of course also some form of automation. Just talking to people how has worked for 15-20 years at VC doing this very comlicated job was a milstone in my life. We also saw waches being made that was tailor made for specific customer were I was not allowed to take pictures.
Some 2 months ago I asked at WPS what peoples experinces was of MR watches and I got lots of insightful answers that I learned from and for which I am grateful. I had those in mind when we visited VC and raised the question. In summary the VC expert agreed that MR is a very complicated technique and not to be taken lightly. He was being firm when not wanting to mention other brands and their quality however he looked me straight in the eye and said "Pelle, if you buy a VC MR watch I will personally see to that it is functioning just like you expect after it has been serviced"!
