Vacheron Constantin & the Mermaids

I discovered recently the existence of these two “Métiers d'art” timepieces made by Vacheron Constantin in 1953.

Both feature a cloisonné enamel dial made by Stern Frères and depicting a mermaid, probably the twin-tailed Melusina.

BONUS: A SNUFF BOX

I also discovered this very surprising table snuff box signed Vacheron et Constantin.

The cloisonné enamel panel is signed NP and depicts “an amorous soldier and a lady in a blue and yellow striped tent upon a leopard-skin rug, his armour at their feet”, possibly Antony & Cleopatra.

I find the modernity of these paintings, which are somewhat reminiscent of Picasso–the black mermaid in particular–, quite fascinating.

What about you?

Best, Emmanuel
