Up Side down, Down Side up - rare Ebay find - 1930's Vacheron Constantin, rectangular, hinged case, with integrated folding clasp

Aug 04, 2019,21:06 PM

Sometimes it's possible to find something quite rare at Ebay.

Another technical dead end of development history.
But the watch has certainly collecting qualities. Probably very small production lot.
Case modified and degraded, assembled wrongly up side down.

Well pretty cheap, congratulations. (I wasn't the buyer.) I guess the watch would easily increase strongly in value if treated the right and proper way. But what would be your suggestion how to proceed with this collectors item? - case restore? - restore ...

Difference between ref 3317 and 3318?

 By: anon438 : August 5th, 2019-20:31
Hi Student, Welcome back here. There is no difference between those refs 3317 - 3318 - because they share the same case number. 1930 Vacheron & Constantin ref 3183 / 3184, is something completely different, a pocket watch with alternative time display: ...

- 3318 also share the same case number?

ref 3317 - 3318 : one watch, one case number

The sold watch has a different number, therefore there are more than one watch of those ref 3317. The folding mechanism looks like a patented design. I would expect there are some more samples out there. But over the long term the technical concept may sh...

 By: xiaoxiao : August 6th, 2019-04:03
I didn't bought it. But I offered a higher price. I donot know what was wrong with the system at that time. Finally, the watch was bought by someone else.

That's so sad indeed

I experienced delays in data transfer and functionality whilst behind a massive hardware firewall (with a different auction house) also.

And now look at that...

This (far right) shows pretty clear what you can get right and wrong when restoring such a significant watch. What I like is the condition of the case. With the redial they probably should have targeted a more original look. My recommendation for the afic...

the pictures above come from the same watch? I can't believe it. If I had the choice, I would rather keep the dial in its original condition.

No not the same watch...

good day.

The later sample..

It shows well what a big risk to the watch is caused by unqualified hands and uninformed owners and/or dealers. Maybe the redial was requested by the owner or by the dealer.
