Thanks so much - really helpful. Any idea what the textured dial is made of: metal not some sort of stone? BTW I had the watch serviced by VC a few years ago and they had to change the Gyromax (ouch!)

this example is circa 1972 just after V&C began a new 4-digit model numbering system.

but my guess is that the dial is metal textured with a "bark" finish. Very attractive

Just to add some info for other owners, the caliber is definitely 1121. As for when it was made, my case is number 489559 - I was thinking it was easy 90s but I read on the other posts it may be from the 70s?
