Hi Dean....
One aspect of the retrograding calendar display that is nice is that the arc for the date is longer than a circular pointer display would be, enhancing legibility.
I understand what you mean by the challenge in reading the time when the hours and minutes are read off a retrograding display, but the Mercator was and is such a great watch that I would happily live with the "difficulty."
