I've been aware of these magnificent pieces only since your post of… what? a month ago? six weeks? Whatever. And your description (I think this is what you meant) of the sound of the hands snapping back in retrograde only adds to the wonder.
But a hopeful word to those who would look for one of these rarities. Just now I checked Chrono24 and fairly quickly found four examples before quitting the search to answer your post. One example of your favorite Enamel Champleve (sorry about no accent) Germany, and three others: a white metal Africa (no claim is made in the scanty description), a platinum Africa, and (a tad inaccessible as one must go to Russia to buy it, and God knows what it might be like getting it through customs on the return trip) a yellow gold Africa. And although your caution about service is no doubt an important one, wouldn't the important thing be to grab one of these (if one had the means), simply adding on to the purchase price, in one's mind, the price (pricey, I'm sure!), of a service?
Being a savvy and experienced collector, you may answer that it is better to wait for the "perfect storm" in such a purchase, when everything is right: correctness, condition, service history, and so on. It would be interesting for me to have your wisdom on this point. In any case…
Have a terrific week! 2" of snow—our first here—last night, with fierce winds blowing the loose snow around making driving in the country quite dangerous. Best greetings, Fred
