Stefano Bemer - A shoe report

So after running around Italy (forgive the feet pun), it would be a shame not to have bought a pair of Italian shoes.

Stefano Bemer is a self taught shoe maker.  In 1983, he set up a shoe repair shop in the town of Greve in Chianti. Four years later, he moved to Florence and began an apprenticeship in shoemaking.  With over twenty years experience, Stefano is one of several renowned Florentine shoemakers, the others being Hidetaka Fukaya and Roberto Ugolini.

Stefano is known for his innovative use of leather as well as unique tanning methods, including the use of red wine.  Of the little glue that he uses, they are all vegetable based and are actually used by bakeries for cake decoration.  Another interesting bit of trivia is that the Academy Award winning actor, Daniel Day-Lewis, was an apprentice under Stefano when he took some time of acting to pursue a study of shoemaking.

Hope this post was of interest as I have another one prepared for an English made shoe.
