I had a friend who belonged to a group that operated out of Marina Del Rey. This was a few years ago and most all the boats were 33' Ericsons with owners who didn't use them frequently, and leased them to the club..
You paid membership fees to learn to sail and then were able to rent the boats most any time. Great deal because you could get a few friends together, all chip in a few bucks, and then sail all day.

My advice is to get down to the local yacht club and talk to them about crewing. Either that or get yourself somthing like a Sabot, something you can get in the water by yourself. So you're not dependent on others in order to get out and practice.
