I've seen a hawk with its talons extended chasing . . .

. . . a rabbit at a distance of several feet.

It was dusk.  I opened the door from the garage to the back yard.  At that moment, a rabbit scampered by.  Not two seconds later, the hawk swooped down, literally within pool cue distance, in an attempt to snag the rabbit.

Fortunately for the rabbit, it was able to find cover under shrubbery.  The visual image of a hawk hunting literally right before my eyes was unforgettable.
