I recently spoke with a Rolex rep

 

and he said that many stolen watches end up on gray market websites, so it's important to always ask the seller to provide photos of the box and warranty card. And yes, Rolex does maintain a list of stolen serial #s, so if the watches ever show up at a service center, it's bad news for the current owner. That said, I'm not sure if a customer can call into Rolex to verify if their watch is stolen or not (Rolex likes secrecy).
