i already have the 50mm...
i already have the 50mm 1.8 usmII portrait lense which came with the camera and despite being excellent lenses they dont sell for much so that wont help offset the cost.
i'll see what happens during my course in September and see if i need it enough to justify the cost. funny that i never justify the cost of a watch :)

Does the castel mini work well? Fail to see an adjustment scale or have I missed it ? It's hard to go wrong with Gitzo !

Dear Flamenco, there is none. Novoflex has bigger/more professional ones, but they cost almost triple. The adjustment works fine and better than the solution from Manfrotto - even without scale. For now I am fine with what I have :-) Oliver

The 1542T has a slightly redesigned magnesium base ( the cutout/lightening areas connecting the base where the legs attach to) and a taller center post. From my understanding, the Gitzo site and press release in the past incorrectly states that the 1542T ...

actually I was looking at tripods last week too. These were too expensive but then I saw their little travel tripod which got me very interested but I'm not sure if it's too small really and just very cute.... we'll see. Looks great, Yours, Andy.

as much as i'd like the 100mm macro financially it makes sense to use my lx3 for macro.
it would be nice to have the 100mm so i can do everything on my Canon, but the cost for me is prohibitive so i'll have to keep using the lx3 which does a superb job at macro. heres a pic which shows how easy the lx3 is to use. this creature is only about ...
Portrait Lens
The 100 2.8 doubles as a portrait lens, that will go some way in justifying its cost. It's one of the best lens to wear that Red Ring ! Coming from a Nikon fanboy, that is saying a lot !

Justification
Any Rolex or Pam easily gets one an entire system with change to spare ... Same thought, same boat , dun rock it ! Perhaps u can get a set of extension tubes (inexpensive & kenko makes them for EF mount), that would convert any exisiting lens for macr...

i've tried the reverse adapter ring with my 80-200 zoom and 50mm and wasnt very inpressed with the results, but then i didnt use any artificial lighting. extension tubes are another thought using the 80-200 zoom. i also have canons excellent 24mm 2.8 wide...

FLY ... forget about running ! Cokin Filters have been reported to cause colour casting. So if u seen them, it may not be u :) But the colour casting can be easily corrected in post processing, although an inconvenience. Am using the Pro-Z series myself c...

The deep of field is so small that is not worth for watch pics. Maybe with tons of patience and "focus stacking" (google this). Cheers, Nilo
Precaution
Depth-of-field is indeed very narrow this close up. U can raise raise the ISO in order to get a small enough aperture to give you adequate depth-of-field. That obviously necessitates use of a tripod and allow use a highest acceptable ISO to maximise image...
