Walking is for the Birds, Part 1

Mrs. C was busy this morning so I went out on my own. First stop, Mission Bay east of Sea World. No penguins or killer whales in sight, but I did meet a friendly hummingbird.

Sitting on top of a pine, as hummingbirds tend to do.

He went through the typical morning stretch and groom routine. I have seen this many times before with other hummers.

It's amazing how much is feather, and how little is bird.

Giving me the eagle eye, if such a thing is possible.

After 5 minutes he moved 20 feet away to a lower branch of a scrub bush. I walked right over with him. This is perhaps from 8 feet away.

He stuck out his tongue after eating a small insect or getting it stuck on the spider web behind ...

A bit more grooming, and posing, and photos taken, and

after a total of 8-9 minutes he flew around the other side of the trees. I took that as a sign our meeting was over.

I went up the east side of the bay about a mile, decided to take a photo across the water, and a duck dropped in to see me. No fooling, I was aiming at the island over there and it dropped right into the picture.

He paddled to shore, and walked my way. Well, he walked in a ducky way in my direction.

Perhaps he thought I had some food. I showed my empty hands "Nothing but the camera, pal"

He immediately turned and began to walk away, then paced up and down the shore for a few minutes.

Keeping a close eye on me all the time. I was perhaps 6-8 feet away.

Having written me off, after 4 minutes he strolled to the edge and swam away.

Please come back for Part 2 where I leave the bay and go cross country.
