Walk from Vertical Bridge to Chollas Creek, Part 1

We came East again today to escape heavy fog this morning. We ended up in Emerald Hills… a neighborhood that is not very well known, as it’s East of Hwy 805 but West of Chollas Lake, and South of Hwy 94.

Over there is where we had our Chollas Heights adventure.

This is why we came here:

Here’s an aerial view from Google Earth. You can see TWO TOWERS, and they are still standing. These make up a Vertical Bridge (who knows what that means, and why?)

View of the towers from the SE, looking west

View from the other side where the gate sign says No Trespassing.

Vertical Bridge is a company that claims to operate 500,000 broadcasting towers. Yes, half a million towers!

I can imagine that some of the locals can’t always focus on signs, and thus ignore them. The gap in the gate was plenty wide enough for my camera to reach through.

We got some photos, then set off for a walk in the Open Space.

We tried to avoid the 35% but it seemed steep anyway.

Near perfect color coordination of shirt with stairs. Yes, I know the date on my Vintage GS Hi-Beat is wrong but there’s no quick-set feature and I got tired of twisting the crown.

Water in the creek.

No hummingbirds today. Just a few songbirds, and this one was the best singer of them all.

Caution advised on this trail. Mrs C avoided the cactus, but a bee landed on her finger and she didn’t know until it stung her, poor thing.

Highway 94 was busy with commuter traffic.

Nasty cactus!

My side of the trail had giant paddle-shaped cactus.

We got back to the parking lot from our first walk (shown in red)  then set off on the second leg of the walk shown in orange.

And perhaps there was a Swiss watchmaker’s California vacation home on this street.

Nice truck and accessories.

Many of the streets around here have space-related names.

The western lap is a much more open and flatter trail.

Utterly useless trail signage.

Homes backing onto open space tend to expand to fit the space.

I can just hear Little Debby saying “But Teacher, the Coyote ate my homework! and

when I ran I lost one of my shoes…"

Maybe the radio waves are frying their brains?

Johnson Elementary.

They have high aspirations for their students — I wonder if any graduates work for NASA or SpaceX?

American Muscle Mustang with Baja California, Mexico license plates...

We met a hawk as we returned from our walk.

He was patient enough for me to get some photos,  then flew off.

Planes keep flying overhead. I think it’s about 10 miles to the airport and I guess that’s not too early to lower the landing gear??

End of the Open Space. But wait! What’s that other TOWER??

Is it in Area 51?

Please come back for Part 2.
