Pelican Went A’ Courting, Part 1
This morning’s rain stopped after an hour or two, so we decided to go out for lunch and walk. We walked first, which turned out to be so interesting that I am now munching down crackers and cheese in lieu of lunch.
It was threatening, but calm over the bay just east of Sea World. The boat ramp was deserted. The water empty.

The path deserted.

One bird fishing.

We spotted a pair of pelicans, and the fun began.

I used to go whale watching, and it was usually evident when Courting Behaviors (as the naturalists like to say) begin. With whales there is lots of splashing about and snorting and jumping in the air. Same with pelicans!

Oddly enough, when whales are courting dolphins show up and watch. When pelicans are courting, the sea gulls seem very interested as well. Maybe to learn some tricks?

I’ve been to the MIramar Air Show and several other demonstrations of precision flying, but never imagined how amazing REAL flyers can be.

Clear still air, no distractions, and reasonable range for photos! What a great day we had watching them (please don’t get bored as Part 2 has the rest of our walk).
Touchdown!

Hey there Miss, want to come over to my place?

A bite to eat first?

She’s playing hard to get but eventually agrees to accompany him.

Whoops, another ladybird plus a seagull. Just when he was getting somewhere.

Throws his wings up in macho fashion, insisting on an answer.

She agrees, they go.

They land.

He smiles, She blushes.

They cruise.

He’s getting worked up (I’m getting embarrassed because my mom never told me how birds “do it”)

They fly over over to his place on the dock.

He gives me the stink eye and says Clear off! She looks out one eye to make sure they’ll be left alone.

Having moved in, she now realizes

he already has MORE ladies at his place...

Apparently she tells him off, and he’s outta there
Does a penalty lap around the bay (showing his physique)

and comes right back a moment later.
As Art would say, You knew this was coming...
Please go on to part 2 to see the walking bit.
