As we walked we couldn't help noticing flowers, hearing birds, stumbling over artwork of plants and birds, etc.

How do you know the parrot was sleepy? Perhaps he's just giving you the side eye - his best Lee Van Cleef impression ....
It's possible, but I zoomed in and I think he was dozing (he didn't squawk at us)
